What is hot Stamping foil?

hot stamping foil or heat transfer foil is a way of transferring an image from an inert carrier onto a variety of substractes to give a sharp detailed design,this transfer is normally achieved using a heat press and dye stamp,where the base coated acts a hot melt adhesive and the top coat gives a high gloss or matt finish.

The majority of stamping foils employ polyester film (PET film) as the base or carrier,
This is because polyester film is dimensionally stable over a wide temperature band.The first step is the application of a very thin layer of release coat(to ensure that the subsequent layers transfer when required)followed by a lacquer(in the case of metallics)or a layer of pigments,The final coat,called a size coat,is a heat activated adhesive coat whose composition varies depending on the substrate that the requires printing.the final process involves reeling the film up to 2 meters wide and 300 meters long and hen,when required,precision slitting to meet the exact customer’s requirement.

The normally press temperature is 110-130 degrees centigrade and pressure is up to 5 tonnes.The dwell time is very short normally measured in fractions of time.

release layer:was to prevent lacquer coat from sticking to the polyester
Aluminum:thin vacuum metalized coatiing of (Al)to give the metallic appearance
Adhesive:Thin heat activated adhesive

Pigment foil
Carrier:Normally a 12 micron uncoated pet film
release layer:was to prevent lacquer coat from sticking to the polyester
pigment:pigment compounded with actylic resin.
adhesive:thin heat activated adhesive
